Berlin (d.de/dpa) - The Carnival of Cultures, Germany’s biggest festival of diversity and peaceful coexistence, is being celebrated by hundreds of thousands of people in Berlin over the Whitsun weekend The high point of the international street festival with its stage shows and parties, which has taken place since 1996, is a parade through Berlin on Whitsunday. More than 70 groups will take part in this year’s parade, which will be watched by hundreds of thousands of visitors as it progresses slowly through the city’s Friedrichshain neighbourhood.

With this year’s motto of “Mitmachen - und Mut machen” (Join in - and give courage), the festival wants to continue its tradition of sending a message to promote diversity, social justice and cultural participation. The parade will once again be led this year by the Sapucaiu no Samba group, its dancers bringing Brazilian flair to Berlin.
